Be ready to get up and dance with facilitator Mũmbi Kaigwa and drummer Isaac (Henry) Anyanga.  This is a unique opportunity to work with internationally renowned artists visiting all the way from Kenya.

Mũmbi Kaigwa is co-artistic director of The Theatre Company but also a celebrated performer, playwright and director.  She has been seen in the television show “Neighbours” and the feature film “The Constant Gardener” as well as numerous stage roles (“The Floods”, “For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Not Enough”, “Talking Heads”).  She also studied African Jazz dance.  She has worked for the United Nations Drug Control Programme and UNICEF using arts based projects to work towards social change and is a former President of Women Playwrights International.

Practical Tools for Writing on Your Feet

Sunday, October 28th 1-3pm

Speaking aloud and actually walking around in the character body of the person you are trying to give voice to can be an exciting way to make text come alive. We will try out a variety of tools to help expand your ability to unabashedly embody the characters that are making their way through you to the page. We will touch on everything from generally how character body influences language, physical rhythm and text rhythm, how to use your own body to help deepen a character’s development, and how to find imagery and text from physical sensation. We will look at these things very concretely- doing specific physical exercises that you can take home to your writing practice.
